Crossing Borders

Crossing Borders for health is a student-run initiative that aims to reduce the barriers in accessing healthcare for refugees and asylum seekers. Crossing Borders believes that all humans, regardless of their immigration status, deserve to access services that cover their basic human right to a standard of living that is adequate for their health.
Crossing Borders was established at Deakin University in 2013 and continues to raise awareness of the pertinent health issues surrounding refugees and asylum seekers both contained within indefinite detention and those that have been resettled into the community.
Crossing Borders is an internationally recognised organisation which within Victoria operates closely with friends and colleagues both at Crossing Borders Monash and Melbourne University.
Crossing Borders is committed to promoting awareness of refugee and asylum seeker health issues.

AMSA

The Australian Medical Students’ Association (AMSA) is the peak representative body for medical students in Australia. AMSA’s objective to connect, inform and represent each of Australia’s 17,000 medical students at Australia’s 20 medical schools. AMSA’s core operations include advocacy, events and programs, and publications. For all involved, AMSA quickly becomes synonymous with amazing social events and the formation of friendships between students at universities around Australia.
A National Executive oversees AMSA’s core operations. The AMSA Executive is elected each year by the AMSA Council, which is comprised of student representatives from each medical school. The Executive is aided by the ongoing efforts of numerous dedicated volunteers who contribute their skills and time to furthering AMSA’s advocacy and engagement efforts. Opportunities exist for anyone to be involved to whatever extent they feel they can contribute.
MeDUSA is all for sharing the AMSA Experience, supporting AMSA ideals at the grass-roots level in Geelong and at the clinical sites. There are plenty of opportunities for Deakin students to share the AMSA love; it is not just for the dedicated activist or politically minded individuals. Together with members from MeDUSA, Deakin is represented at AMSA National Council Meetings, and the Annual National Convention promoting the ideals of Deakin at a national level.
AMSA is committed to engaging with as many medical students as possible on whatever issues they consider important. This engagement is achieved primarily via student representatives at a Medical Society level. It is important that you sign up to AMSA’s email list, and participate in AMSA’s online polls and campaigns. Being able to confidently say we have the documented support of thousands of medical students gives crucial weight to AMSA’s advocacy efforts.
For more information, head to the AMSA Website or the AMSA Facebook page.

MSCV

MSCV stands for the Medical Student Council of Victoria and is the peak representative body for all medical students studying in Victoria. The council is comprised of student representatives from Melbourne, Deakin, Monash and Notre Dame medical schools. The council elects a Chair, Secretary and IT officer, with the chair representing the council’s voice, representing the overall views of Victorian medical students to key stakeholders.
The MSCV meets regularly which allows an opportunity for interaction and communications between all the Victorian medical schools to share knowledge and experiences and discuss issues that are important to students in our state, such as internship capacity, quality of clinical training and student well being. This discussion allows the MSCV Chair to present a unified voice and have an active dialogue with key stakeholders such as the Victorian Government, Department of Health, Postgraduate Medical Council of Victoria, AMA Victoria and AMA Doctors in Training, to name a few. In recent years the advocacy focus was to ensure internship places in Victoria for all students training at Victorian Universities as well as improving the application process for internships.
In addition to advocating for Victorian medical students, the MSCV organises several events that have been a great success in previous years and provide an excellent opportunity for networking with students from different universities.
For more information, head to the MSCV Website or the MSCV Facebook page.
