Global Health Conference

The GHC responds to a growing demand for focus on topics in health beyond the usual horizons. It explores issues such as climate change, human rights and peace, poverty, maternal and child health, resource allocation, and Natural Disasters and Crisis Management.

Last year the GHC was held in Brisbane, and attracted speakers such as Tania Major, Gabi Hollows, Prof. Ian Frazer, Jack de Groot and Dr Nick Coatsworth.

This year delegates will be asked to choose a stream - Earth, Water, Fire, Wind and Human – to allow students to explore issues in more detail in workshops and tutorials with an exciting ‘Challenge Day’.

The conference goes spreads over four days over our holidays and costs $150. Registration opens (will be updated)

Medical Association for Prevention of War (MAPW)

The Victorian Medical Association for Prevention of War (MAPW) branch (http://www.mapw.org.au/) have offered to run a workshop in Geelong following a very successful one run earlier this year. The workshop is run by ICAN (International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons - http://www.icanw.org/) in partnership with the Australian Conservation Foundation and focuses on nuclear weapons!

The New Clear Exchange workshop will be a dynamic mix of information and discussion about nuclear weapons issues. They hope to excite lively discussions with ICAN supporters and other NGO s on how nuclear disarmament

is interconnected with the issues of climate change, aid and development, domestic nuclear issues and social justice. They will provide contemporary and easy to understand information and resources on:

* Current nuclear weapons capabilities and national and international efforts towards disarmament

* The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (in the lead up to the 2010 Review Conference at the UN)

* The Model Nuclear Weapons Convention (developed by NGOs internationally)

* The United Nations Treaty System and how NGOs work within the system

Before it is confirmed that they will run a workshop in Geelong, they want to gauge what kind of interest students would have attending (whether it is worth them coming down) and if you would be keen on attending a saturday workshop (say 12-6) or if another day would suit better?

Email Payal (psing@deakin.edu.au) if you are keen and if there is enough interest, they can run one down here!

MAPW are having another meeting in the Barwon region this THURS 25th evening.
