Global Health Group

Welcome to Universal Health @ Deakin (UHAD)

Deakin Global Health Group Promo

Who are we?

More than 30,000 children die every day. In sub-Saharan African, 1 in 5 children die before reaching the age of 5. The majority of these deaths are easily preventable, with malnutrition contributing to 60% of all child mortalities in developing countries. Currently, over 1 billion people are living on less than $1 a day. These are more than just statistics. They are indicative of a world where there is widespread poverty and lack of education, violation of human rights and gender discrimination, prevalent social inequities and ongoing civil and international conflicts. A world where global health is still very poor.

Shocking figures such as these are the underlying motivation behind the formation of Deakin University’s Global Health Group (GHG). The GHG is a subcommittee of MeDUSA, formed by students who are interested in and committed to improving global health.

You can download a Powerpoint presentation about UHAD at our Downloads Page here.

What have we done?

2008 was the inaugural year for Deakin Uni’s GHG. Founding co-chairs Payal Singh and Josh Mark were instrumental in setting up this fantastic group and creating the foundation for a GHG empire to be built upon in future years! In partnership with MeDUSA, the GHG raised over $6000 in funds for various countries and causes, including aid for Burma and money to go towards an HIV organisation in PNG.

Last year saw an even greater number of exciting events and activities run:

A speaker night on “Conflict and Health”, Blue Week to raise money and awareness about depression and mental illness, and Green Week to do likewise for the effects of climate change on health. Also the highly successful Teddy Bear Hospital  project was undertaken, where some of our students visited Moriac Primary School and taught the students about their bodies and health by acting as “teddy doctors”!

What we hope to do?

Don’t miss out on the range of GHG projects planned for 2010. These are brought to you by your proud and passionate current GHG co-chairs Mich and Amy (2nd year) and your committed clinical rep Payal (3rd year)...

  • The Library Aid Project:
    • Provide textbooks, stethoscopes and a helping hand to fellow med students at the Fiji School of Medicine.
  • Speaker Night:
    • Hear from doctors and individuals who have taken their expertise to different parts of the world.
  • Movie Night:
    • Watch a life changing film and become inspired to make a difference.

Also keep your eyes open for UHAD’s monthly newsletter – keeping you up-to-date will all our latest activities and events – and our soon to be established Global Health Library and Book Club!

What can you do?

It is our vision that the Deakin Global Health Group, UHAD, will help increase opportunities for students in international health and development (i.e. electives, community development projects) and provide a means for Deakin Uni medical students to learn more about global health issues, advocate about these issues and find ways in which we can help those less fortunate than us.

So, if you want to make a difference and change our world for the better, get involved in UHAD! Med School is about a hell of a lot more than just attending prac classes, PBL’s and lectures. What you will learn through being a part of this GHG will make you a much better doctor than what you will gain by reading a textbook!

Be sure to sign up as a UHAD member at our O’Week stall, be involved in our various events and activities throughout the year, and if you have any questions or queries don’t hesitate to contact your GHG representatives below:
